International Course on Volcanology

Olot (La Garrotxa) – La Palma 

The International Course on Volcanology – Olot (La Garrotxa) – La Palma aims to provide comprehensive training in volcanology through a balanced combination of theoretical lectures, practical sessions, and fieldwork. Over two intensive weeks, participants acquire fundamental knowledge of magmatic and volcanic processes, as well as current analytical and research methodologies.

The course introduces key concepts for the accurate recognition and analysis of volcanic products and deposits, the construction and interpretation of stratigraphic sequences, and the reconstruction of eruptive processes. Participants are also introduced to volcanic process modelling, including the application of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques in volcanology. In addition, the programme addresses volcanic monitoring, risk assessment and mitigation strategies, crisis management, and the conservation of volcanic geoheritage.

Field excursions to emblematic volcanic regions such as the Garrotxa Volcanic Field and La Palma (Canary Islands) provide a unique opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom. Under the guidance of experienced specialists, participants explore key geosites and volcanic outcrops in both regions, gaining hands-on experience in geological observation and interpretation.
